Online Course Development Grant

LAS Online has established an online course development grant program with the goal of converting existing undergraduate courses to an asynchronous online mode. We believe that this online course delivery format will best serve the increasingly diverse learning needs of Iowa State’s students, whether enrolled on campus or at a distance.

Only courses listed in the Iowa State University catalog and experimental courses that have been approved by the LAS Curriculum Committee will be considered. Courses proposed for conversion must have enrollments that justify their redesign to the online mode and the concomitant investment of resources and faculty time. The college will provide up to $3,000 per credit to the department for course development and faculty support. The department will have up to one year to produce the full online course. The instructor and department commit to offering the course at least twice during either a fall or spring semester within a two-year period. The course must be completely developed and adhere to LAS Online's Course Quality Guidelines before it is offered.

Priority Guidelines for AY 2011-12

1.   300 and 400 level courses with potential for high enrollment

2.   Courses that fulfill requirements for the Bachelor of Liberal Studies (BLS) degree program

3.   Courses that fulfill a general education requirement or form part of an academic major

4.   100 and 200 level courses with potential for high enrollment

Master’s Certificate or Degree Program Online Development Grants

These grants target the conversion of existing MA or graduate certificate programs to the asynchronous online mode. The college will provide up to $3,000 per credit hour per course to the department for the development of up to five core courses for an approved certificate or degree program. The department will have three years to make the complete conversion to asynchronous delivery for a degree program or two years for a certificate program. Departments will agree to a rotational plan to ensure that students have access to all courses in the program in a timely manner. The department will have up to one year to produce full online courses after the funds have been made available, will agree to offer each course online three times (at least twice within a two-year time span in either a fall or spring semester) and will agree to follow the LAS Center for Online Learning guidelines for quality assurance. Only courses that are listed in the Iowa State University catalog and experimental courses that have been approved by the LAS Curriculum Committee will be considered. Courses must be completely developed and adhere to LAS Online's Course Quality Guidelines before they will be listed in the schedule and open for enrollment.

Proposals should be submitted via email to Dr. Julio C. Rodriguez, at jcesar @ iastate.edu. Questions may be directed to Amanda Rasmusson (294-1979).

Online Course Improvement Grants

The Online Course Improvement Grants are available for courses that have been delivered in an online format for more than two years and which need updating. Priority will be given to courses whose proposed updates will bring them up to compliance with LAS Online Course Quality Guidelines. Online Course Improvement grants award up to $1000 per credit for each targeted course. Instructors/Departments will have a semester to finish the course update. In order to satisfy the grant, Departments will agree to offer the course in the online format at least twice within a two-year time span in either a fall or spring semester. Once the grant is awarded, the Department will collaborate actively with LAS Online in the updating of the course.

Proposals should be submitted via email to Dr. Julio C. Rodriguez, at jcesar @ iastate.edu.
